International cookery can inspire many to sample the wonderful flavours that perhaps our palates don’t normally experience. However, when you have people at hand who can demonstrate dishes from their homelands the opportunity to sample wondrous dishes is just too good to miss.

At St. Louis Grammar School, Kilkeel, Year 11 GCSE Home Economics students were very lucky to be treated to a Spanish cookery session by Language Assistant for Spanish. Maria Sastron-Tomillo, who hails from the Canary islands, came to cook two typical Spanish dishes for the pupils.

Maria, who has been working hard in the Spanish Department at St Louis during the past year treated the pupils to an authentic Spanish ‘tortilla’ and ‘pan con tomate (bread with tomato topping.) Head of Spanish Mrs Carole Downey was also there to lend a hand. The Year 11 pupils were also involved in the preparation of the dishes and thoroughly enjoyed the tasting session afterwards.

Miss Aisling McGivern, Head of Home Economics, thanked Maria and the Spanish Department for the cookery demonstration claiming “it was great to show pupils how they can adapt their diets to taste, try and cook foods from different countries and it’s an even more enjoyable experience when its delivered in its traditional way by Maria.”
